Creating a Morning Routine That Actually Sticks

Not a morning person? Neither was I. Here's how I built a gentle morning routine that set me up for success without the 5am wake-up calls.

Let’s be honest — those “wake up at 4am to become a billionaire” routines aren’t for everyone. If you’re anything like me, trying to become a morning person felt forced and unsustainable.

A gentle morning setup — coffee, journal, no rush

The Problem With Hustle Culture Morning Routines

Wake up at 5am. Meditate for 30 minutes. Journal 3 pages. Exercise. Cold shower. Green smoothie. All before 7am?

That lasted approximately 3 days before I hit snooze and felt like a failure.

A Gentler Approach

Instead of overhauling everything, I added one small habit at a time.

Week 1-2: No Phone First Thing

Instead of immediately scrolling, I let my eyes adjust to natural light. I splash water on my face. That’s it. No other changes.

Week 3-4: Add a Glass of Water

Before coffee, before anything else — a glass of water. Simple, but it made a difference in my energy.

Week 5-6: 10 Minutes of Movement

Not a workout. Just stretching, a short walk, or some light yoga. Moving my body gently.

Week 7-8: The Journal Page

Just one page. Sometimes it’s gratitude, sometimes it’s a brain dump, sometimes it’s just “I’m tired.”

One page a day — that's all it takes to feel a little more grounded

My Current Morning (That Actually Happens)

  1. Wake up naturally (usually 7am)
  2. No phone for the first 30 minutes
  3. Glass of water while the kettle boils
  4. Tea or coffee while journaling (one page)
  5. Short walk or stretching
  6. Shower and start my day

The key? Progress, not perfection. Some mornings I scroll for 20 minutes. Some mornings I skip the walk. That’s okay — the routine serves me, not the other way around.

What’s your morning routine like?
